ICICYMA was founded in 1870. Activities then included outings, chess and badminton. The men’s hockey club was formed as a section of ICICYMA in 1911, and the ladies hockey in 1940’s .
In 1969 the Club purchased 20 acres at Garryduff, Rochestown which meant selling the Greg Hall, South Mall and the grounds at Glasheen Road. The transfer of all club activities to Garryduff was completed in 1972.
The hockey club wasn’t a leading force in Munster or Irish hockey until the 1960’s. Over the years the men’s and ladies hockey teams have won many cups and leagues, most notably with the men winning the Irish Men’s Senior Cup for a record breaking 3 in a row in 1967, 68 and 69.
In 1972 the club had 1 grit pitch and 3 grass pitches; In 1992 the grit pitch was upgraded to a sand based synthetic surface which was renewed in 2011. In 2005 an International standard water based pitch with covered seating was added. The club has consistently provided players to both underage and full International teams.
In 1962 the Club formed the first Indoor Bowls club in Cork, which flourished with the move to the new sports hall in Garryduff.
Outdoor Bowls started with the move to Garryduff and the provision of a new bowling green. The green is now considered to be one of the best in the country due to the hard work of the members and grounds men.
The 3 grass tennis courts were replaced with floodlit sand based courts in 1992.
Badminton, which had been played in the Greg Hall, flourished with the move to Garryduff and the new sports hall incorporating 2 full sized courts and a viewing balcony. Badminton is still a major sport in the Club.
